Look Ma, No Rap!

March 13th, 2008 by Forge

Made this for an event here in Raleigh. No rap (or very little of it). Something new for me, but sometimes it’s better that way (hides from the purists). This is all completely random, and I made it over night, so I don’t consider it to be stellar but it’s a pretty good mix I think.

Diamonds Are For Never…

January 4th, 2008 by Forge

This saturday is a really fun gig that I’ve been anticipating for a while now. I’ve been meaning to put up an entry about it, but as you can see from previous entries, I’ve been busy!

Anyway, Saturday I will have Cat’s Cradle all to myself (and not opening for a change) to throw a massive dance party. The best part about the party is that the money is going to support a good cause. I honestly can’t think of a better way to start the new year. Here’s the official press release for the party, which has been dubbed “diamonds are for never”

Saturday January 5th at the Cats Cradle the number one music spot in the triangle comes another dance from Gallagher Music and Chapel Hill’s International Issues Club. The international issue’s clubs first dance party (AIDS Dance) was at Blend and sold out at 11. So were moving up to the largest venue around.

The DJ is different this time around with DJ Forge on the wheels of steel as the DJ for the night, but this dance will be even bigger. DJ Forge can be found at almost every big hip hop show at the cradle as the house DJ as well as all over the area, hes also responsible for producing local artists albums. He is sure to throw a wild party with everyone back for Winter Break.

$10 to get in

So show up and bring any extra money, dollars change anything to make donations for this great cause..

*******Donations go to.. *********
Organization: Global Action Foundation
[helping those that have been effected by the civil war in sierra leone]

Programs within GAF

1. Malnutrition Eradication Program
In children under 5, severe malnutrition is a major problem and working toward its resolution. We run a district-wide community outreach program and therapeutic feeding centre. The outreach program involves community sensitization, nutrition surveillance in both villages and primary health units, and retrieval system for identified children as well as their guardians. The current therapeutic feeding centre is a medical unit providing free health services to WHO-classified severely malnourished children while educating their guardians. Since our community outreach program involves 82,400 children under 5, we have decided to build a dedicated medical facility in order to accommodate for an increased patient capacity of up-to 200 severely malnourished children per month. With a program integrating clinical medicine, public health, education, and agriculture and established in collaboration with UNICEF, WFP, and the Ministry of Health, we can reduce severe malnutrition by 80% within the next 5 years in Port Loko District.

2. Amputee Empowerment Program in Sierra Leone
In war-disabled communities, we empower amputated individuals from 9 communities in Kono — home of the “Blood Diamonds.” The program supports their self-proclaimed most pressing needs, which ubiquitously includes food security as well as access to health care and child education. As a health-focused organization, we are now running a mobile clinic and building a health center for the amputees. On the launch of the mobile clinic, we encountered 170 patients over two days. Construction on the health center will be complete as of September 2007. In the sectors of food security and education, we advocate for the amputees by developing relationships with other specialist non-profits that can fulfill the needs of the amputees. Our program focuses on health care while integrating agriculture and education in collaboration with the US Embassy, Direct Relief International, and the affiliated Sierra Leonean Ministries. We can empower the amputees to become self-reliant within the next 10 years in the Kono District.

Toronto…

December 20th, 2007 by Forge

This is a really late update, but the trip up north was awesome! Here’s a brief rundown of the trip, with pics!

Met up with michelle in NYC on the way. I fell asleep on the plane:

Back O' The Plane

It was DUMB turbulent. I threw up:

*VOMIT*

Just kidding on that one. But finally made it to Toronto only to learn that the apartment I had arranged was not going to be available. So I was an orphan for the rest of the trip, here’s my tent (thanks to Michelle’s neice):

My Tent // Bed

Also just kidding! I ended up staying with the homie, DJ Mensa. First night we went out to Andy Pool Hall. Really nice spot, DJ spinning funk and REAL hip-hop the whole night:

Wood Is Good! (HAHAHA)

The next day we went to check out the CN Tower (I like to do tourist stuff too!). So many pictures from the tower, and LOTS of inside jokes. Fun times there:

It's Magic!! (magic wand!!)
Punch-Out!!! (my Lil’ Mac from Punch-Out! impression)

Ice Skating outside the tower. With SBs!

Then we found a random white wall. So we decided to make a lookbook. Random, I know, but hey it was fun!

Then we walk back outside and it’s COLD!

Next it was time to do some shopping. Word to Livestock! (thanks for the tee and the lace locks fellas!)

The next day everyone decided that even though I was an orphan that I was big enough to find my way to downtown by myself. Waiting for the street car:

When I got downtown, the homie Atic and I did some more shopping. Word to Lounge! And I got mad records too. And look, I found some more Indians like me!

Another Indian!
And Another one!!

Later that night, it was time for Peachfuzz @ Chinadoll. I had a blast while I was there:

End of the night, everyone is tired:
Fatigue...
Me too...

I was supposed to go straight to the airport after this to head back home. But I was replaced at the last minute for the Little Brother show, so I stayed an extra day! I don’t have any pics because I was just hangin out. Snapped this last one when Michelle was dropping me off:
Time to leave :(

Needless to say I had a great time, and can’t wait to go back (when it’s warmer!). There are tons more pics that I didn’t post. They can all be found in a set here on my flickr page. Or you can jump right here to check out the slideshow version.

I came back and got hit with the flu, so I was out of commission all of last week. The first night at mosquito went off just right and this week I’ve been focusing heavy on the DJing and attempting to spin a variance of music styles, so I can turn the party out in different ways. Next post is going to be a free mixtape from Dan Johns and me. Gonna finish that up in the next couple of days, so stay tuned!

Also, before I end this I wanted to post a link to DJ Mensa’s December Exquisite mix. He finished it the day I arrived. Really dope mix, so make sure you check it out! Here’s the link and also the tracklist:

Mosquito….

November 4th, 2007 by Forge

Haven’t been updating much lately because I’ve been super busy (i mean, I DJed for about 12 hours yesterday, so yeah…)

Anyways, hard work pays off it seems. Proud to say that I’ve just been given a weekly at Mosquito, one of Raleigh’s premier spots!

VOTED BY METRO MAGAZINE AS THE TRIANGLE’S BEST DANCE CLUB IN 2007
mosquito: Redefining Nightlife in Raleigh

located in raleigh’s historic depot district, mosquito is a distinctive oasis for the triangle area’s trendy, local international crowd.

arriving at the club’s unmarked entrance on commerce place, you would not be immediately aware of the elegant ,well crafted, ultra-modern interior that awaits: imported italian glass tile mosaics adorn the walls and columns, underlit onyx illuminates the bars, white leather couches grace the sitting areas and black lacquered floors unite the space to create a rarefied cosmopolitan confine – a place that brings to mind some of the finest nightclubs in new york, milan or miami.

early in the evening, our talented djs infuse your night with mellifluent beats and soothing seductive rythms. as the night progresses, the energetic music mix climaxes into a full blown dance party.

make your way to the bar and you will find, behind it, the familiar faces of some of raleigh’s most experienced bartenders mixing their intoxicating infusions.

things are lookin up….

Stop annoying the DJ (an ongoing series)…

July 9th, 2007 by Forge

I plan on making this an ongoing series here on the site. I’ve been doing clubs for about a year now so I’ve had some time to build up my party skill, but on the flip I’ve had quite a bit of time to observe the type of people that come to party.

Before I get started ranting about the specific types of people I dislike, I first want to say that I do enjoy most of the people that are at the clubs I spin at. There’s nothing like the feeling you get when you drop a song and you get a collective “ohhhhhh!!” from the crowd (and it’s an especially potent rush when you can do that throughout the night). The people that come to a party and enjoy themselves with others, and just have fun are my favorite party-goers. They are the reason I really do enjoy Djing in clubs. However, like most subsets of people on earth, there are some bad apples.

The first installment of this series will be dedicated to someone I like to call Demandotron (fitting, since the transformers movie was just released). Demandotron is a person who makes a request (more on requesters in a future update) and expects to hear their song at that very instant. Just telling Demandotron that you will play their song is not enough. Once you run through two to three songs and they don’t hear what they want, they will make another appearance at the booth. It’s at this point that Demandotron will ask you “how much longer until you play it?” My answer will vary but for the purpose of this story, I will reference an actual event from a few months ago:

Demandotron returns to booth asking when I will play her song…
Me: Hmm, give me about fifteen minutes and I should be able to fit it in.
Her: Fifteen minutes?!?!?
Me: Yeah, I have to fit it in with what I’m doing now, so it’ll be a few minutes
Her: (in a high pitched two year old voice) BUT I WANNA HEAR IT NOWWWW!! (as she stomps her feet in a fit)

So as you can see, Demandotron’s secret weapons are a combination nagging and intimidation. Fear not fellow DJs, for I will teach you how to deal with her. The most effective tactic is actually quite simple, just ignore her! Once she is done with her fit, just get back to what you’re doing and act as if she isn’t even standing there. This will deal a devastating blow, as Demandotron is fueled by attention. Victory will be yours!

You may have noticed that I have referenced Demandotron as “her” quite a few times, and with good reason. Demandotron is usually a young woman (most often spotted while spinning for college fraternity/sorority parties) who is used to instant gratification and being catered to. If you’re lucky maybe you can be her first taste of reality.

The DJ is not your personal jukebox.
